Today we are celebrating three years of excellent work by our partner organization StopNCII.org (Stop Non-Consensual Intimate Image Abuse). StopNCII.org is a global online tool that combats intimate image abuse through innovative device hashing technology. Their work aligns with Pornhub’s core value: consent, by preventing the spread of non-consensual images. StopNCII.org is used by companies such as Facebook, TikTok, Reddit, and Snap Inc., who are all key players in the technology sector and recognize this as a global issue we can come together and work on. By helping to protect user privacy and stopping the distribution of non-consensual images, it ultimately helps make the internet a safer place. Thanks to their work and the help of many partners, the tool is now protecting over 1 million non-consensual images from being shared online.
How Does StopNCII.org Work?
StopNCII.org is the world’s first, on-device hashing technology tool. People concerned about intimate image abuse can create unique identifiers of their images, otherwise known as hashes or digital fingerprints, from the privacy of their own device.
Only the hashes are shared with StopNCII.org, not the original image (or video) importantly meaning that the intimate content never leaves the user’s device or rendered visible to anyone else. When a case is opened with StopNCII.org, hashes are presented as a string of letters and numbers, rather than the image itself, to protect the user’s privacy.
Hashes are then shared with participating partners, and if an image is uploaded to one of these sites, matches the corresponding hash, and meets partner policy requirements, the image will be sent for moderation. If the result meets the criteria of intimate image abuse, it will be removed and blocked from being shared further across partner platforms.
2024 Milestone
The 1 million milestone marks the number of ‘hashes’ that have been created on StopNCII.org to protect against intimate image abuse. This rise in hash generation marks an almost 130% increase from the previous year and illustrates the rising global awareness around the issue of non-consensual intimate image sharing.
David Cooke, Sr. Director of Trust & Safety Regulations & Partnerships at Pornhub, had this to say on the subject:
“At Pornhub, Trust and Safety are foundational to everything we do. Our commitment to setting the highest standards in these areas relies not only on comprehensive internal policies and expert moderation practices but also on the implementation of advanced, proactive tech solutions like StopNCII.org to protect our users and uphold the integrity of our platform’s content. StopNCII.org's success demonstrates what’s possible when tech leaders unite with a shared commitment to safety and consent online. We remain dedicated to this mission and encourage more platforms to join us in creating a safer digital landscape for all.”
For anyone who needs support or requires preventative action, StopNCII.org can help remove control from perpetrators and put it back into the hands of the content creators.
